Case Study: Teen Behaviour

What is the purpose of the social business?

  • To support people who are raising 9-19 year olds, addressing the complex adolescent demands that negatively impact on parent/carer wellbeing and work performance.

Many employers offer support to their workforce with young families. Yet, parents of teens also face real issues. It's no longer a lack of sleep … or dealing with teething or potty training…Instead, parents struggle to manage their teenage children’s behaviours, they might be worried about grooming, bullying issues, attitudes at home, relationship breakdowns, divorce and separation, sexual exploration, identity, all of these things. Research shows that 40% of parents/carers decline in their mental wellbeing as their first child hits the teen years and we want to help them during that stage.

How do they achieve it?

  • They deliver training to empower working parents/carers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make proactive decisions regarding their children’s emotional, social and physical welfare.
  • They also provide a training course for People Managers to help them ensure staff and colleagues can draw on support in the workplace regardless of their children' age.

Development Priorities

What were they hoping to get out of their Connecting with Purpose session?

  • To see if the concept resonated with people: do  colleagues personally face challenges in balancing work and the demands of their older children?
  • To better understand the types of support that employers provide to staff and their decision-making processes, in order to refine the product/support offer and to expand and strengthen the client base •Advice on how best to create tailored services for staff within large organisations

Development priorities for the social business, at the time of taking part in Connecting with Purpose

  • Raising corporate awareness of the issues faced by working parents/carers and the negative impact it has on wellbeing and productivity.  Expanding client-base and product/service offer
  • That's where my struggle is: How do I get in front of the right people? How do I package my product in a way that resonates with organisations so they quickly see that this is something that does need to be addressed as it impacts on their bottom line, in terms of the well-being, productivity, work-life balance of their colleagues.

Take-aways from the session

The Connecting with Purpose session helped the social enterprise to become clear about what was holding the business back - lack of clarity about the support packages that employers can commission

The feedback that I got was great: I've been able to act on it. Rather than where I thought I needed to be, they were able to bring me right back to my initial approach and how I'm presenting myself. They said, they really got [the issues] and my passion, but it was how businesses [and organisations] work with me in terms of the packages, which wasn't clear. So, I've really had to do a lot of work on the back of it I've been able to clarify what my message [and offer] is

The attitude of the staff was amazing. I could see that they were committed to helping me move my business forward, but the process was challenging. For instance, I’ve spent years crafting and tweaking my website so to hear that it ‘wasn’t clear’ was a blow, but on that feedback alone, I was able to look closely at my client journey and make some impactful changes to clarify my messaging.

There’s power in the fact that there were so many people just focused on my business. I've never experienced that before.
